Bachelor Project

Flatland is a speculative project imagining future human relationships with nature. It is a digital meadow that presents a future in which human-designed natures live in symbiosis with wild natural environments. It is guided by three beliefs: humans as equal rather than superior to nature; in technological development as extension of human evolution; and in reigniting biophilic behaviour through virtual experiences.
Flatland invites visitors to question: Could a virtual experience evoke the same feelings as spending time in the outdoors? If in the future we have further industrialised nature for the production and consumption led aims of society, what will we consider wildlife to be? Could the creation of virtual natures just be another organic step towards natural evolution? What possibilities could experiences with virtual nature have for our wellbeing?

Flatland is the first project from an ongoing creative partnership with 3D and motion designer Monika Adamzcyk. We are working on projects researching and designing for a possible future when our access to the outdoors could be constrained by social distancing laws, loss of biodiversity, and other causes.

Awarded with the Peter Cannings Memorial Award for innovation in digital design and digital media.

Much like the rest of our project, the concept for the typeface was to find a visual middle ground between more humanist, and organic letterforms with the evidently digital, bitmaps. You can Email me to get the trial file.
We wanted to create an extension of our project that allowed our audience to experience the Flatland Environment. For this we designed and developed three Instagram AR filters. Visit our Instagram to try them out.
